Program

Description

Work in a local hospital in Arusha's Mental Health Department alongside a small team of psychiatric-trained nurses, counsellors, psychotherapists, social workers, and mental health practitioners who deliver vital psychological and psychiatric services to the community.

The department addresses a comprehensive range of mental health challenges, from anxiety and depression to substance abuse, relationship difficulties, psychosomatic illnesses, trauma, stress-related disorders, sexuality concerns, sexual abuse recovery, and parenting support. Through clinical assessment, counseling, and therapy sessions, clients receive education on psychological issues and develop personalized coping strategies. Beyond individual care, the clinic actively engages in community outreach, hosting support groups for families affected by mental illness, conducting fieldwork to raise awareness about critical issues, and utilizing media platforms to address social concerns like violence against women.

This placement offers an exceptional opportunity for psychology students, social work students, and mental health professionals to gain hands-on experience in a culturally rich and impactful setting. Due to the sensitive nature of mental health work, volunteers should have prior education or experience in psychology, social work, or related mental health fields.

As a volunteer, you'll become an integral part of the treatment team, participating in clinical assessments, counseling sessions, social work initiatives, and contributing to treatment planning discussions under professional supervision.

This transformative experience provides profound fieldwork exposure while navigating cultural contexts distinct from Western approaches to mental health. You'll develop cross-cultural competency, enhance your clinical skills, and make a meaningful difference in a community where mental health resources are critically needed.

A typical

Day in the Life

Morning (8:00 AM - 1:00 PM): Begin your day at the hospital with team briefings and patient case discussions. Your activities will vary daily based on patient needs - you might assist with clinical assessments for new patients, observe counseling sessions with current patients, participate in group therapy, or support individual treatment plans.

Each day brings different challenges and learning opportunities as you work directly with the mental health team to provide care and support.

Afternoon (1:00 PM onwards): After wrapping up hospital duties around lunchtime, your afternoons are free to explore Arusha and the surrounding areas. Use this time to experience local culture, visit nearby attractions like local markets or cultural sites, connect with fellow volunteers, or simply relax and process the meaningful work you've done during the morning.

Evening: Enjoy dinner and downtime, reflecting on your experiences and preparing for the next day's varied activities at the hospital.
