Description
Just beyond Bali’s golden sunsets and beneath the surface of its vibrant youth culture, there is a quiet yet powerful movement rising. It is called KISARA, short for Kita Sayang Remaja (We Care About Youth).
Founded by teenagers, for teenagers KISARA was born out of a pressing need: to respond to the rising challenges facing Indonesian youth. These challenges include unsafe sexual behaviour, unintended pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections, drug abuse, gender-based violence, and social discrimination.
This project operates with one clear vision: to cultivate “responsible youth” through a by youth, for youth approach.
At the heart of this projects work are four strategic pillars:
Glorious — Empowering young people through peer to peer education in creative and relatable ways, using edutainment (education and entertainment) to deliver critical information on reproductive health, sexuality, consent, gender equality, and more.
Obvious — Ensuring a clear and systematic approach to both internal and external collaborations, building strong networks with schools, community groups, health institutions, and other youth organizations.
Reflection — Creating space for both individual and group reflection, helping volunteers and youth evaluate their actions and continually improve how they implement programs and services.
Willingness — Fostering a spirit of integrity and commitment in every volunteer, anchored in a shared purpose of social impact.
As a volunteer at on this program, you are not just offering your time. You are joining a movement. You may find yourself:
-
Leading youth workshops on reproductive and sexual health
-
Assisting in one on one or group counseling sessions
-
Producing social media campaigns and journalistic content to spread awareness
-
Engaging in research and data collection to better understand youth challenges
-
Advocating through creative campaigns and outreach events
-
Supporting community empowerment through education, media, and creative expression
Each day is different, but all are filled with purpose. You will work side by side with Bali’s future changemakers — passionate teens who are rising above stigma and rewriting what it means to be young, informed, and empowered in Indonesia.
You will also become part of a vibrant community of youth leaders, professional mentors, and alumni who have experienced firsthand how this project can change lives. Together, you will contribute to a lasting cycle of empowerment, one that begins with education and expands into social transformation.
A typical
Day in the Life
After breakfast, you make your way to the projects center in Bali, where your work as a volunteer begins. Every day is a little different, but always purposeful, rooted in one of Kisara’s key pillars: education, counselling, advocacy, media, and youth empowerment.
8:00 AM – Arrive at Kisara and Join Morning Briefing
Start the day with the local team to review the schedule, debrief on program updates, and set intentions. Whether you are new or familiar, this is your moment to align with the day’s focus — be it campaign planning, youth workshops, or social media production.
9:00 AM – Support Peer Education or Outreach Sessions
Join or facilitate sessions on youth reproductive health, gender rights, substance abuse prevention, or emotional well-being. Use creative methods like games, roleplay, and storytelling to help young people explore complex issues in a safe and supportive space.
11:00 AM – Content Creation or Counselling Assistance
Based on your background and interests, you might support the projects media team in developing social campaigns or infographics, help document youth stories, or assist with individual or group counselling led by trained staff.
12:30 PM – Lunch and Reflection Break
Enjoy a break with your team or fellow volunteers. Discuss what’s working, what can improve, and reflect on the impact of the morning sessions.
1:30 PM – Community Engagement or Program Planning
In the afternoon, you might help plan a youth event, contribute to a research project on social behaviour, or prepare a public advocacy campaign. Volunteers often work side by side with Kisara’s teen leaders to co-design programs and community events.
2:30 PM – Wrap-up and Team Check-In
Close the day with a review session or informal team check-in. Offer feedback, share insights, and align for the next day.
Once your volunteer day is complete, head back to Canggu, where the island offers a different kind of inspiration. Unwind with a swim in Sepeda Hostel’s pool, join a sunset yoga class, browse local artisan markets, or enjoy a smoothie bowl at a nearby café.
Evenings are for connection and relaxation. Whether you are sharing stories over dinner with other volunteers, joining a hostel karaoke night, or watching the stars from the rooftop, every evening adds depth to your journey.
