Program

Description

Our volunteer program in Zanzibar, plays a vital role in addressing social issues related to early childhood education and development in low-income communities. Many families in the area struggle to access quality education for their children, leading to limited opportunities for their future. Our program aims to bridge this gap by providing nurturing childcare and quality education in a safe and supportive environment. By volunteering with us, you'll directly contribute to improving the lives of children and fostering positive change in the community.

Our program focuses on childcare and teaching at a local pre-primary school in Zanzibar. Volunteers work alongside local educators to support the physical, cognitive, and emotional development of children from low-income families. Your role as a volunteer involves engaging with children through various activities, assisting with literacy and math lessons, and promoting play-based learning for effective education.

Surroundings and Locations: Volunteers will be working and living in the picturesque coastal areas, surrounded by stunning beaches and vibrant local culture. The pre-primary schools where volunteers will be placed are conveniently located not far from the hostel accommodation, being in either walking distance or taking a short Dala-Dala ride, providing easy access to both work and leisure activities.

Working Partners: Volunteers will work closely with local educators and staff at the pre-primary school, collaborating to provide quality education and care for the children. Our team provides guidance and support to volunteers throughout their placement, ensuring a rewarding and fulfilling experience.

Expectations and Equipment: We expect volunteers to bring a compassionate attitude and a willingness to engage with children from diverse backgrounds. No special equipment is required, as we provide all necessary materials for the tasks at hand. Volunteers can expect comprehensive training, guidance, and support from our team, along with opportunities for personal and professional growth.

A typical

Day in the Life

Start your day at 7:30am with a big breakfast at the Hostel accommodation before making your way to placement.

Your daily routine will vary depending on your length of stay and familiarity with the school's operations. Initially, you'll focus on understanding the school's challenges and procedures, gradually integrating into the program.

  • Engage with the children during their morning activities, fostering curiosity and exploration through fun, outdoor-based games and sports programs, promoting physical activity and youth development.

  • As the day progresses, you'll assist with literacy-focused activities, incorporating play-based learning to make education enjoyable and effective, enhancing early childhood education and development.

  • A mid-morning break provides an opportunity for the children to recharge with a nourishing snack of porridge before diving into early childhood math activities, contributing to nutrition and cognitive development.

  • Wrap up the day with entertaining games, songs, or other engaging activities, fostering a positive end to their learning experience, promoting socialization and emotional well-being.

Afternoon brings you back to your accommodation, where you can unwind, socialize with fellow volunteers, or continue planning and developing activities for the school.

There is also a pool onsite, so it is perfect for hot Zanzibar afternoons!

Explore the beach and its surroundings during your free time, taking part in weekend tours, safaris, scuba diving and cultural events to enrich your time here too!
