Program
Description
Maternal and child healthcare remains one of the most critical challenges facing many communities across Tanzania. Our Pregnancy, Birth & Baby Program works alongside local hospitals and healthcare providers to support pregnant women, new mothers, and newborns who often have limited access to quality antenatal, delivery, and postnatal care. High patient volumes, resource constraints, and healthcare staff shortages create significant pressure on maternity services, particularly for vulnerable women from low-income and marginalized communities.
Through this program, volunteers contribute to both hospital-based maternal healthcare and wider community health initiatives designed to improve outcomes for mothers and babies. Working within maternity wards, antenatal clinics, and community outreach settings, participants help support local healthcare teams while gaining valuable insight into women's health, childbirth, newborn care, and public health challenges within a developing-country context.
The program aims to strengthen access to maternal healthcare, improve health education, and support safer pregnancies, deliveries, and postnatal experiences for women and their families throughout the region.
A typical
Day in the Life
No two days on this program are exactly the same, offering volunteers a unique combination of hospital-based clinical experience and community outreach work.
Most days begin at one of the local hospitals on Zanzibar's East Coast, where volunteers work alongside midwives, nurses, and healthcare professionals within maternity wards, antenatal clinics, postnatal departments, and related women's health services. Depending on the day, you may spend time observing or supporting consultations, assisting with patient monitoring, participating in ward rounds, or learning about the challenges and realities of maternal healthcare within a resource-limited setting.
Alongside the hospital placement, volunteers also participate in community outreach initiatives designed to extend maternal healthcare beyond the hospital walls. These outreach days take you directly into local communities where many women have limited access to healthcare services, education, and support. Activities may include delivering health education workshops, facilitating discussions around pregnancy and newborn care, supporting mothers one-on-one, providing basic health checks, and helping women access information and services that can improve both maternal and child health outcomes.
This combination of clinical exposure and community engagement provides a holistic understanding of maternal healthcare in Tanzania, allowing volunteers to see both the hospital-based challenges of pregnancy and childbirth, as well as the wider social and healthcare barriers faced by women and families throughout the community.
